South of Boston/Rhode Island 05-816 PUBLISHER from the Michael Jones PU BLISHER South of Boston/Rhode Island M J O N E S @ M D N E W S . C O M 508-888-1502 @MDNewsBoston greaterboston.mdnews.com Welcome to the fall issue of MD News. This month, we're doing something that I've wanted to do for years. We're expanding the South of Boston edition's circulation into Rhode Island. I've had clients in the South Coast region who have long expressed an interest in having us tell their stories to the Rhode Island physicians located just a few miles away, but "across the border." Similarly, there are providers in Providence, Rhode Island, who are doing exceptional work that deserves to be highlighted. One such story is that of the Roger Williams Cancer Center, which is featured in this month's issue. In addition to their integrated approach to cancer care, they're doing the kind of cutting-edge research work, particularly in the area of immunotherapy, that you would typically not associate with a 130-bed hospital in Providence. And speaking of cutting-edge work, we always love "first-in-the-region" stories, so it's a pleasure to feature Greater Boston Urology and the latest o•ering for the treatment of prostate cancer. High-intensity focal ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of the prostate has been used for many years outside the United States, but was only recently approved by the FDA for use in the United States. Physicians at Greater Boston Urology have performed the procedure themselves many times before, but only on patients who were able to travel outside the country for their care. Now they're able to perform the procedure locally. Our last issue featured a story about the Center for Specialty Care at BID-Milton Hospital and highlighted how the a‰liation with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has helped bring a higher level of care to the local community. This issue has a follow-up story on the additional level of women's health services that the community hospital can now o•er. And our story about the Spine Center of Saint Anne's Hospital explains how a triage system is the key to their multidisciplinary approach to bringing relief to South Coast patients su•ering from neck and back pain. As always, I'd like to thank the people who have made the stories of this edition possible. If you have any questions or comments, or a story of your own you would like us to tell, please feel free to call me at 508-888-1502, or email me at mjones@mdnews.com. Sincerely, Michael Jones
