The STTAR Center also has a well-established Titanium Rib Program. The Trauma/Burn Clinic treats severely injured children who come to the Hospital, providing surgical evaluation, The Heart Center provides a wide range of cardiac care for children with heart defects. We have a dedicated cardiac surgery operating room with its own team of specialized nurses and assistants, a dedicated pediatric intensive care unit, and a specialized cardiac cath lab designed specifically for children. The newest renovations to The Children's Hospital of San Antonio bring an improved surgical experience with the care you've come to expect from a world-class children's hospital. For any family, finding out a child needs surgery can be nerve- racking. At The Children's Hospital of San Antonio, we want your experience to be as smooth as possible. Before your child has surgery, you and your family are welcome to schedule a presurgical tour to see and explore the Hospital prior to the day of surgery. When renovating the physical space of The Children's Hospital of San Antonio, we transformed the second floor into an inviting, calming environment for children and their families. Surgery registration now has its own dedicated area, located near the elevator to make it convenient for families to check in and prepare for a procedure. Once registered, children are welcome to wait in the Patty and Joe Robles Family Waiting and Play Area. Funded with a $1 million gift from Patty and General Joe Robles, former CEO of United Services Automobile Association (USAA), the Play Area is equipped with televisions and comfortable furniture to provide a restful space for children and families. Designed for You When it's time for your child's procedure, parents and children proceed to the preoperative area, where children are prepared for surgery. Families also get to meet the entire medical team. This can include the anesthesiologists who put your child to sleep, surgeons who operate, nurses who care medically for your child and Child Life specialists who provide emotional support for your child. Children are then brought back to the surgery suites, all renovated with state-of-the-art equipment. You can trust your child is in the hands of experienced, board-certified surgeons. Families wait in the Robles Family Waiting and Play Area during surgery. For a shorter procedure, a member of your child's care team will discuss the surgery with you once the procedure is complete. For longer procedures, a care team member will update you about halfway through the procedure, as well as at the end. You will know in advance how many updates you can expect. Once surgery is complete and your child is awake after surgery, families and children are reunited in the new, larger postoperative area. If your child's surgery required admission to the Hospital, he or she will then be moved to an inpatient floor. Our rooms are newly renovated, private and designed to be child-friendly, from the bed design to the medical equipment.
