W ELL SPA N G OOD S A M A RITA N HO SPITA L and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital recently installed Genius 3D MAMMOGR APHY equipment to o–er patients digital tomosynthesis. Studies have shown 3-D mammography can detect breast cancer up to 15 months earlier than 2-D mammography and detect 41 percent more invasive breast cancers, regardless of patient age or breast density. If nodules are detected, the A™rm Prone Biopsy System — a complementary technology to the Genius 3D — will allow WellSpan Health physicians to better target lesions and calcifications with 360-degree access. "Tomosynthesis allows us to detect some breast cancers that might be missed using 2-D mammography," says John Nawa, MD, radiolo- gist, Chief and Chair, Division of Women's and Interventional Imaging, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. "It is exciting to be able to o–er 3-D mammography in the community setting with radiation dosages and compression times similar to that of 2-D mammography." REDUCING FALSE POSITIVES W hile di–erences bet ween 2-D a nd 3-D ma mmog raphy may not be evident to patients during the test, it may become apparent following the screening. When compared to 2-D technologies, 3-D mammography o–ers patients up to a 14 percent reduction in ca llbacks from fa lse positives, according to studies published in JA M A and the American Journal of Roentgenology. Joa nne Trapeni, DO, radiologist, Chief, Division of Women's a nd Interventional Imaging at WellSpan York Hospital, credits the thinner, serial slices and multiple projections of 3-D mammography with providing better definition of suspect and benign nodules, which ultimately reduces false-positive recalls. Digital tomosynthesis, or 3-D mammography, offers patients up to a 14 percent reduction in callbacks from false positives, according to studies published in JAMA and the American Journal of Roentgenology. 3-D Mammography and Prone Breast Biopsy Technology at WellSpan Health BY K AITLIN GUNTER Safer, Better, Faster: PROVIDING PATIENTS WITH E ARLIER BRE A ST CANCER DE TECTION THROUGH IMPROVED MAMMOGR APHY AND MORE COMFORTABLE BIOPSIES IN THEIR COMMUNITIES IS A PRIORIT Y FOR MANY PHYSICIANS.
