HUG FOR HAPPINESS Feeling the wintertime blues? Boosting your mood can be as simple as hugging someone you love. A quick cuddle increases the levels of feel- good hormone oxytocin in the body. A strong handshake or good, old-fashioned pat on the back have a similar effect. One neuroscientist notes that cozy habits such as wrapping yourself in a blanket or holding a cup of warm tea in your hands may also increase oxytocin levels. KEEP YOUR COFFEE? If cutting back on coffee is on your New Year's resolution list, read on. Drinking java every day may actually provide health benefits. According to research published in the American Journal of Medicine, women who consume approximately 36 ounces of coffee per day are less likely to experience tinnitus, otherwise known as ringing in the ears. In contrast, women who ingest less than about 12 ounces of coffee daily have a 15 percent higher likelihood of developing the condition. Other studies associate drinking coffee with lowering the risks for Parkinson's disease, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. DON'T GIVE IN TO DRY SKIN During the winter, dry and flaky skin can cause itching and look less lustrous than during other times of year. You don't have to invest in pricey products to plump up your outer layer with the moisture it needs. In fact, one of the most effective solutions may be sitting in your pantry. A drizzle of olive oil is an effective option to rehydrate and soothe skin. You don't need a lot. Apply a thin layer to dry skin to absorb the nutrient-rich, anti- inflammatory benefits of this natural oil.
