Teaming Up to Treat the Tiniest Hearts Pediatric specialists from Johns Hopkins All Children's Heart Institute and Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Institute routinely collaborate to treat heart disease in utero. THE FETAL HEART PROGR AM at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital is a multidisciplinary team that draws from two of our institutes—the Heart Institute and the Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Institute—to collaborate in the detection, comprehensive assessment and management of heart disease prior to birth. e program brings together pediatric cardiologists, obstetricians, neonatologists, genetic counselors, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons and a clinical program coordinator to manage all types of complex congenital heart disease, congenital heart abnormalities and heart conditions that run in families, including: � Aortic stenosis � Cardiomyopathy � Fetal arrhythmias � Heart failure � Hypoplastic left heart syndrome � Pulmonary stenosis � Single-ventricle heart defects � Tetralogy of Fallot � Transposition of the great arteries � Truncus arteriosus � Ventricular septal defects e Fetal Heart Program team has 25 years of experience in providing exceptional diagnostic accuracy and management of congenital and familial heart conditions. e program was one of the first in the nation to establish an outpatient fetal heart rate monitoring program, and our fetal and pediatric cardiology programs are certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories. � Johns Hopkins All Children's annually performs an average of 800 fetal echocardiograms, 350 total heart operations and 400 cardiac catheterizations, with outcomes consistently ranked among the best in the country. � As part of the National Pediatric Cardiology network, Johns Hopkins All Children's cardiologists participate in the single- ventricle monitoring program, a quality improvement initia- tive to enhance outcomes and define the standard of care for babies diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and other conditions. � e Fetal Heart Program is a nationally pioneering center for research and development of fetal therapies, including the evaluation and treatment of fetal heart failure and fetal twin pregnancy complications. � e program uses the most advanced echocardiographic techniques and other advanced diagnostic imaging procedures, such as magnetic resonance imaging, to evaluate and treat fetuses with lesions of the lungs.
