Well One Connection Summer 2012 A PUBLICATION FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT HURON REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER Prenatal Health Pointers Everyone knows that eating a well-balanced diet and getting regular exercise are essential components of a healthy lifestyle. For expectant women, however, maintaining these habits can help ensure the health of mother and baby even after delivery. Studies show that mothers who maintain a healthy weight have a lower risk for serious complications, such as gestational diabetes, than mothers with a high body mass index (BMI). Women with a high BMI may also endure longer deliveries. In light of these complications, a greater emphasis has been placed on practicing healthy habits throughout pregnancy. “Nutritionally, mothers should aim to eat an additional 300 calories per day, while consuming a diet rich in folic acid and fatty acids,” says Nathan Loewen, MD, FAAFP, family medicine physician and obstetrician with New Life Family Medicine. “Exercise regimens should include low-impact activities, such as moderate walking or swimming. Even 5-10 minutes of activity can have a positive impact.” An Experience That’s All About You Physical preparation is only one part of the equation when it comes to a positive birthing experience. Emotional health also plays a key role during delivery. The birth experience at Huron Regional Medical Center focuses on accommodating the physical and emotional needs of new mothers. Offering the ideal mix of advanced medical services and supportive staff, HRMC allows parents to welcome their newest addition close to home, near their families and loved ones.
