It is an alternative to long-term use of anticoagulation medication for qualified patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. "WATCHMAN is basically a small umbrella that's about two to three centimeters in diameter," said Anurag Singh, M.D., F.A.C.C., clinical cardiac electrophysiologist at UMC and assistant professor and co-director of electrophysiology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. "Following a transesophageal echocardiogram to measure the size of the LAA, we use transseptal access tools, a guide wire and a catheter to put WATCHMAN in place by traveling through vessels in the leg and across the heart.
