going back to school Not Just for Kids Regardless of your age, it’s never too late to enroll in a college course, take a cooking class, learn a new language or obtain a health certificate. You may pursue continued education due to a recent layoff, in hopes of expanding your knowledge base for your career or simply to hone your interests. The benefits extend beyond learning a new skill, though. Turning Over a New Leaf Changing or improving the direction of your career path isn’t reserved for 20-somethings. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 80 percent of adult learners who go back to school graduate with a degree, compared to 50 percent of students who attend college immediately after high school. As a mature adult, your decision to take an online course or go back to school fulltime isn’t parent- or peer-influenced. Furthering your education on your own terms completely changes the way you attend classes, study and learn. Here are some additional benefits to learning as an adult: Healthy Mind Increased brain stimulation: If you aren’t truly enjoying your job or haven’t taken the time to engage in thought-provoking activities, learning new information can positively impact health. A study supported by the National Institute on Aging revealed that the more formal education a person has, the better his or her memory and learning ability even in the presence of brain abnormalities characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. Pocketbook Possibility of career advancement: Whether you take a computer class to brush up on your skills or decide to pursue an MBA, becoming more educated enhances your competitive edge. Entertainment/Socialization Explore topics of interest. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to sew, cook or garden, now is the time. Whether you’re pursuing a gardening class to become more self-sufficient or learning Spanish to work alongside your community’s Hispanic population, continuing education can help you become more confident and well rounded. By taking your passion to the next level, you may embark on a whole new career journey.
