Fun Family Activities Go fish. Remember those serene days out on the lake with nothing but a rod and a tackle box? Relive the excitement of catching a bite with your child. Teach him or her the art of angling, from spooling the reel to casting the line. Those lulls between catches are a great time to start a conversation. Get crafty. Arts and crafts teach fine motor skills and instill a DIY attitude. Whether you pass on sewing skills by smocking a dress or impart your favorite knitting patterns to make a scarf, pick a project with a result your child can wear or play with for years to come. Sail away. Strap on the life jackets and sail out to your favorite cove with the kids on deck. Sloop, catboat, dinghy—whichever watercraft you prefer, there are plenty of opportunities for fun and learning aboard a sailboat. Sharing your knowledge of masts and jibs will pique your child’s interest in all things nautical and inspire a lifelong love for outdoor activity of all kinds. Tee up. 18 holes are no walk in the park. Golf gets your legs moving and can significantly improve mobility and heart health. Plan a trip to the driving range and teach them proper swinging technique. They’ll love learning the lingo (“mulligan,” “duffer,” “nine iron”) and may even ditch the video games for a round with grandpa every once in a while. Best of all, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing this timeless tradition hasn’t been lost. Hike to your health. You may not be able to tackle the 10-mile stretches you traversed in the past, but you can still find a trail or walking path that matches your mobility. Hiking is a great way to get the grandkids moving. When preparing for your next trek, pack a field guide to trees, a journal and a plastic bag so you can identify trees and collect their leaves. Later, the kids can laminate the leaves in an album to create their very own tree identification book. No matter what stage of life you’re in, TriStar Health can meet your needs.
