YOU DON'T HAVE TO LOOK FAR FOR HELP GETTING IT BACK ON TRACK. AT HURON REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER, a team consisting of registered nurses, physical therapists and a physical therapist assistant care for individuals with a variety of acute and chronic wounds, including burns, surgical wounds, cellulitis, dermatitis and, most commonly, foot ulcers. "Many factors can lead to foot ulcers, including diabetes, which may damage the nerves in the feet and prevent patients from feeling a cut or sore," says Jenny Reimer, RN, BSN, WOCN, wound care nurse at HRMC. "Insufficient circulation in the blood vessels of the legs and feet can slow healing by preventing enough oxygen from reaching a wound." Wound care staff can also help in healing wounds after surgery, including infections or complications as well as ostomy complications and trauma injuries. A Full Toolbox of Treatments The wound care team at HRMC uses a wide range of therapies to treat chronic wounds, from special dressings and skin substitute products to ultrasound and electrical stimulation that can jumpstart the healing process. The team may refer patients to other providers to assist in addressing the underlying causes of nonhealing wounds. Healing chronic wounds takes more than advanced treatments and expertise – it also takes education. "Teaching patients about wound care and prevention is a big part of what we do," says Karmen Weinzirl, MS, PT, director of rehabilitation services at HRMC. "Many people think, for example, that wounds should be left open to air, but they actually need a moist environment to heal. We advise keeping them covered. The more patients know about the wound healing process, the better they're able to participate in their care." ■ Want to know more about wound care at HRMC?
