Our cover story spotlights Akron General's Neuroscience Institute and the three physicians who lead it: neurosurgeon Georges Markarian, neurologist James Gebel, and neuro-interventionalist Firas Al-Ali. A dream-come-true for Dr. Markarian, who helped plan and is now the chair of it, the new Institute offers patients in the Akron-Canton area 'hope and cures' closer to home. Leading off our Special Section on Technology is a feature story about MetroHealth's recent $5.4 million investment in radiation oncology technology. The new equipment will shorten treatment times and improve the accuracy, precision and individualization of specialized cancer treatments. Controlling and curing pediatric epilepsy is the focus of our second feature story. Akron Children's Hospital's new Pediatric Epilepsy Program is staffed and equipped to diagnose and treat — both medically and surgically — the many facets of epilepsy. The goal is to normalize the lives of children with this life altering disorder. On the opposite end of the age spectrum, coming up in the next (November-December) issue of MD News, is a Special Section on Caring for Older Patients. As the baby-boomer generation continues to age, the healthcare issues related to those over 60 continue to grow.
