Dear friends, Giveaway AnnounceMent ▲ Nathan Howell President and CEO As a not-for-prot hospital, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center functions as a charitable organization with a community focus. We invest all our prots back into the hospital—funding the programs, services, and staff we need to provide the medical care our community wants—while also providing low-prot services, hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of charitable care, and health care to those patients on Medicare and Medicaid. We do all of this because we know it's the right thing to do. But being a not-for-prot hospital also means that we rely on you for support, and residents of the North Country demonstrate year after year that Claxton- Hepburn is important to our community. In this issue of Living Well, we take time to thank those who donated to our Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Foundation, while also shining a spotlight on several of the new physicians, programs, and services available at the hospital. Thank you for your continued support of Claxton- Hepburn, and enjoy this issue of Living Well. Find the hidden apple in Living Well and win a Fitbit Charge 2! Ashley Peggs Breast cancer is not the only type of condition that may be forecasted through the High-Risk Breast Health Program. Mapping genetic mutations may also help identify the risk for orpresence of other cancers, including brain, colon, ovarian, and pancreatic. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a screening regimen to manage a patient with a high risk for breast cancer may include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of breast tissue annually, usually beginning about six months after a mammogram. "If there's something that's showing up as consistently abnormal, a radiologist may recommend more frequent radiology studies or refer the patient to a surgeon for a biopsy," Dr. Alston says. "If breast cancer is discovered, we will have a multidisciplinary breast cancer consultation that involves the surgeon, the radiation oncologist, and the medical oncologist. Together, this team can tailor treatment to result in the best possible outcome." To learn more about the Claxton-Hepburn High-Risk Breast Health Program, visit www.claxtonhepburn.org/breasthealth. On a Mission to Serve To help ensure that women in the community are getting their mammograms when they need them, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center is working to collaborate with area healthcare centers and businesses to identify women in the community who are due for the possibly lifesaving test and contact them to schedule a screening. "My focus is to reach out to women between the ages of 40 and 64 who have never received a mammogram or who don't continue to receive their annual mammogram," says Ashley Peggs, mammography patient navigator at Claxton-Hepburn's Richard E. Winter Cancer Center. "I am here to act as advocate for the patients and make sure they have access to the resources they need." Peggs not only helps patients schedule mammograms, but she also identifies barriers to care—such as lack of insurance, problems getting time off work, and childcare or transportation issues—and works with women to remove them. If you haven't received your mammogram and are having personal or financial difficulties that are holding you back, contact Ashley Peggs at 315-393-8880, ext. 6243, or by email at apeggs@chmed.org.
