"Going through treatment on your own, with no guidance from someone who has endured the same thing, is like putting together a puzzle with no picture on the box to guide you," Scott says. "Hearing from someone who has been there and done that is like having the picture on the box. It is truly amazing to know you are not alone." Managing life during chemotherapy was one of the areas in which Scott wanted to focus his efforts. Together, the Cleveland Clinic and the Scott Hamilton Cares Foundation launched chemocare.com, a web site to help chemotherapy patients navigate the experience. FINDING FAITH FOR NEW CHALLENGES Seven years after Scott's testicular cancer diagnosis and treatment, doctors discovered a benign tumor in his brain, one of three that would be diagnosed during the next several years. "I thought, Wait, I have already paid my dues," Scott says. "I seemed to have a black belt in collecting life-threatening illnesses." But again, Scott gave his trust to his doctors and relied on the emotional support of his wife, Tracie, and four children to face whatever came his way. "The biggest challenges lead to the greatest blessings. I have been given the opportunity to inspire people and families facing the challenges of cancer," Scott says. "There is so much out there that is better endured with faith and a positive mind-set. My experiences have taught me to live joyfully today." To learn more about Scott's journey and cancer support services, visit chemocare.com, scottcares.org, or radcare.org. "My goal is to empower survivors and engage the cancer community in a new way. By oering support and connectivity with health care providers and other individuals who have been through cancer themselves, we can help the newly diagnosed better understand the fight they are about to endure." —Scott Hamilton Grabbing the Gold in Life It's been 33 years since figure-skating icon Scott Hamilton took gold at the Sarajevo Olympics, but some of his biggest victories have been off the ice. He successfully survived testicular cancer and recurring benign brain tumors with a hope-filled spirit. Learn Scott's secrets to overcoming adversity, and how to "choose to celebrate life" even in the most challenging times, by attending the May installment of the Monsignor Klimek Healing Presence Lecture Series. Hosted by the HSHS Sacred Heart Foundation, the series focuses on the importance of spirituality in healing and provides the community with encouragement to make a positive difference in the world.
