FOR MORE THAN three decades, the UMC Southwest Cancer Center has been participating in some of the newest and most advanced clinical trials across the country. "We're committed to developing a world-class clinical trials program," said Sanjay Awasthi, M.D., director of the Southwest Cancer Center at UMC Health System. "It's our goal to use everything available to bring hope to patients who may have no other options for treatment." Today, the Cancer Center is working with roughly 11clinical trials, some of which include: + A new Phase 1 Clinical Trial testing a drug — developed by the Texas Tech University Cancer Research Center — that combines fenretinide and safingol in such a way that it's caused major regression of response to cancers in mice and animals. + One clinical trial is testing a drug called anamycin, which is believed to help reduce heart damage during chemotherapy or from diseases such as leukemia orlymphoma. + e Lung MAP trial uses the genetic makeup and characteristics of a patient's cancer to develop tailored therapy options. + e FROST trial is a new treatment option for breastcancer that involves using cryotherapy to freeze the cancer.
