What's
OFF
Whether you are working to lose weight or
build up your overall health, you may find
yourself considering a total ban on an entire
category of food. Before you do that, consider
what you might be giving up, and be sure
you're not throwing out the baby with
the bathwater.
"When you eliminate a food group, you
may sometimes lose weight, but you could
be missing out on vitamins, minerals and
macronutrients your body needs to function
properly," said Louisa Whitmire, RD, LD,
CHC, Dietitian, Wellness Program with
St. Dominic Hospital. "You must make sure
that no matter what type of eating plan you
follow, you focus on eating a good variety of
foods to help your body function properly."
Be sure your daily diet is filled with the
nutrients your body needs. A varied diet isn't
just a way to keep things interesting for your
taste buds. The nutrition our bodies require
is so diverse that it's much easier to get if we
consume a variety of foods.
"Everyone's ideal balance will be a little bit
different, depending on factors such as height,
weight and health history," Whitmire said.
"Talk with a nutritionist and find an eating
plan that will give you the most energy while
also meeting your personal goals."
