WHEN IT COMES to your health, you're in charge. A doctor is a valuable partner in your quest for better living, but ultimate responsibility for your health and well-being falls squarely on your shoulders. Adopting a proactive attitude – as opposed to a reactive one – will help you stay a step ahead of medical problems. This change in mind-set can shoo away the flu, help the heart and help fight cancer. The trick is to take charge of your health by adopting some of these habits: • Know your family health tree. Genetics can be a good indicator for many different diseases and conditions. You may be at increased risk for a disease suffered by your grandparents, parents or siblings. Be sure to share this information with your doctors. • Keep a copy of medical records, including copies of doctor's notes, lab test results and radiology reports. Having this information in your possession will allow you to communicate quickly with healthcare professionals without having to wait for them to get your files from other facilities. HRMC offers a free online patient portal site for easy access. • Be prepared. Make the most of each doctor's appointment by coming prepared with questions so you can have an informed discussion with your doctor about your condition and possible treatments. LOOKING OUT FOR YOUR HEALTH CAN BE A LITTLE OVERWHELMING FOR JUST ONE PERSON. THAT ' S WHY IT ' S NICE TO HAVE A PLACE NEARBY THAT WILL HELP. Modern conveniences, such as fast food and an abundance of TV shows, make unhealthy choices too easy. Schedule healthy meals and exercise and get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. • Pick your partner. One of the best things you can do for your health is to recruit a medical partner to help you stay healthy. Doctors train and study for years to accomplish one goal: keep you healthy. Find a physician you like and consult him or her not only when you're sick, but also when you're healthy to seek advice for preventing health problems. Your Healthcare Home Base HRMC is close to home and equipped with providers, services, screening tests and programs designed to help you be proactive in your health. Even if a disease or condition sneaks up on you, it's HRMC's mission to get you back to the healthiest you possible. ■ If you need help finding a physician, visit our online physician finder at www.huronregional.org/ find-a-doc.
