Good medicine for
cancer patients
A growing pool of research shows that exercising during
treatment is not only safe, but also helpful for mind, body
and spirit.
While you will require more rest than usual during
treatment, too much rest can exacerbate decreases in body
function, muscle volume and range of motion.
Work with your health care team to choose activities
you enjoy that also take into account your diagnosis and
condition. You'll boost overall health and benefi t from:
– minimized fatigue;
– reduced nausea;
– decreased risk of anxiety and depression; and
– maintaining or enhancing physical functioning and
muscle volume.
The Northwell Health Cancer Rehabilitation Program
encourages active approaches to treatment. Specialists tailor
plans for patients at any age and any stage, and collaborate
with your care team to optimize your outcome.

Fighting fatigue
Fatigue can feel overwhelming during
cancer treatment, but getting up and
moving is worth the effort. Consistent
exercise can reduce that way-too-tired
feeling by up to 50 percent, according
to the National Comprehensive
Cancer Network.
These fatigue-busting strategies can
give you a lift:
–
Break it up. Instead of exercising
for a full half-hour, work out in
manageable chunks: Take a 10-
or 15-minute walk in the morning
and another in the afternoon.
–
Know your limits. If you are
having trouble catching your
breath, feel lightheaded or
experience sharp pains, halt
your workout.
– Consider alternatives. Find an
exercise program tailored to the
unique challenges and needs of
cancer patients. Northwell Health's
Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation
Services (STARS) program can help.

during treatment can signifi cantly enhance overall well-being.
