OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNECOLOGIST ELYSE BROCK, MD, UNDERSTANDS THE STRUGGLE. SHE CAME HOME TO HURON SO SHE COULD HELP. "WHAT I'M LEARNING more every day is that women in Huron and the surrounding areas are typical Midwesterners, unlikely to complain until something is really bothering them," Dr. Brock says. "I have seen women deal with painful and annoying gynecological issues longer than needed when medical interventions are available locally." She has talked to women with fibroids so large that they feel pregnant, women with periods so heavy and painful that they miss a week of work every month, and women with urine leakage so frequent that they can't exercise or play with their children. "When I asked these women why they waited to seek treatment, many didn't want to undergo surgery, not realizing that nonsurgical interventions are common nowadays," Dr. Brock says. "Other times, embarrassment or busyness kept them from seeking help. As women, I think that we often put others before ourselves, but I want to partner with women to change this trend." continues on pg. 4
