from the Publisher Lower Hudson/Bronx H Dan Senkiw PUBLISHER Lower Hudson/Bronx DANSENKIW@MDNEWS.COM (914) 967-6565 ELLO, AND WELCOME to the October issue of MD News Lower Hudson/Bronx. This month's cover story spotlights the Department of Orthopaedics at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and focuses on the department's sensitivity to the diversity of the population it serves. The team provides general and subspecialty clinical services, including hip and knee reconstructive surgery, hand and upper extremi- ties surgery, foot surgery, and orthopedic trauma and sports medicine services. The department's "Game Day Same Day" sports program is in full swing and provides consultation and treatment to athletes the same day their sports injuries occur. The diverse experience and specialty knowledge found within the department equates to a synergized team of experts able to provide advanced care to the unique population of the Bronx and beyond. Our feature story this month looks at two entities that are working toward interoper- ability in an effort to streamline communication and enhance the efficiency of patient care. Beginning at what is often patients' point of entry into an episode of care, we discuss interoperability in the context of emergency medical services (EMS). We speak to Jim Langabeer, Ph.D., EMT, President and CEO of Greater Houston Healthconnect, about the challenges of achieving interoperability between EMS and hospital providers, and highlight the technology in action at Lehigh Valley Health Network. Turn to Page 26 to learn more. As the landscape of the American health system rapidly changes, so too are the operations and technologies that guide the practice of medicine.
