IN CARE LEADING THE WAY Meet CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center's new president, Ian Thompson Jr., M.D., and learn about his plans for the future of health care in South-Central Texas. IN CARE Dr. Thompson has seen his fair share of the world. Many years in the military and living abroad have taken him across seas and borders, but there's only one place that Dr. Thompson truly calls home. "Military training was responsible for bringing me to San Antonio for the first time in 1980," Dr. Thompson says. "While I've strayed every now and then, my roots have always been here. It's where my wife and I decided to raise a family, and it will always be considered my home." When searching for someone to fill this leadership role at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center, Dr. Thompson was an easy choice. All it took was one look at his resume. In addition to retiring as an Army colonel, Dr. Thompson has led numerous research associations in urology and oncology, as well as major studies in prostate cancer. He's also published more than 600 papers. "I've been fortunate to have had the chance to oversee a wide variety of specialties, all in high-performance organizations across the country," Dr. Thompson says. "The CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System is high-performance as well, and I look forward to further enhancing the care we can provide the community." SPEAKING OF CARE Having spent much of his adolescence living in Spain and Mexico, Dr. Thompson is fluent in Spanish. Being bilingual provides Dr. Thompson with the chance to bring a whole new level of care and compassion to the entire population of South-Central Texas. "I'm a firm believer that speaking someone's language, understanding their culture and knowing where they're coming from will help you provide superior care," Dr. Thompson says. "We have a large Hispanic population in the area, and it's important that we do our best to help everyone in our community." In addition to providing more culturally sensitive health care, Dr. Thompson wishes to accomplish additional goals as well. "The key is to maintain compassionate care for patients within and beyond our organization's walls," Dr. Thompson says. "That means we need to expand our capabilities as an organization and continue our mission of outreach and prevention within the community." ✚ "I consider it to be one of the greatest privileges of my life to be able to help CHRISTUS advance its faith-based mission that's so important to my family and me. I'm thankful for this opportunity and can't wait to continue helping patients and the community in all the ways CHRISTUS does."
