Adolescents who feel insecure about their looks may be more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors. According to a University of Missouri study, girls who perceive themselves as overweight are more likely to drink and smoke, and boys who see themselves as too thin may be drawn to tobacco use. Create occasions to connect with your teen to help encourage healthy habits and get a reading on your teen's self-condence level. Have dinner together as a family or take regular evening walks so you have a chance to talk. Health and wellness news you can use. SAY YES TO THE NAP For people with type A personalities, taking a midday snooze may sound self-indulgent. However, an afternoon nap may be just what the body and brain need to reboot. Benets abound for nappers at every stage of life, according to multiple studies identied by the American Sleep Apnea Association. Studies have found that children who keep a regular nap schedule are more likely to be calm, engaged and joyful, while adults who nap in the middle of the day often experience increased concentration and better capacity tolearn new information. A long sleep period isn't needed to reap the benets. A10- to 20-minute power nap can do the trick. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR PROS AND CONS Fall is the season for apples, a key ingredient in one of today's hottest health trends — apple cider vinegar. The fermented liquid has been promoted for a wide range of possible health benets. Some people claim drinking apple cider vinegar helps manage weight or reduce blood pressure. However, proceed with caution if you choose to ingest this sour tincture, as few scientic studies have been conducted with human subjects. In addition, apple cider vinegar may lower potassium levels and decrease bone density.
