The Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program recently awarded Cohen Children's Medical Center a grant of nearly $211,000. The donation will support the Kohl's Cares Keeping Kids Healthy Program, a community- wide nutrition and physical activity program to improve children's health and wellness. Kohl's has donated more than $4.4 million to Cohen Children's since 2000. Children need at least an hour of physical activity every day. The transition to fall means more than "back to school" for children. Classrooms require kids to stay seated so they can focus on learning. That's good. Not-so-good is their loss of activity. Like grown-ups, children need to exercise for good health. It's also important for their normal development. Outside of school, kids easily default to watching TV or using their digital devices. Furthermore, fewer daylight hours limit playtime outside, so creating opportunities for activity can be tricky. But it's possible with a little planning. – Schedule it. Though schools must offer students gym class, making time for activities to enjoy together — such as family walks — can help keep wellness a priority. It sets a good example, too. – Encourage extracurricular activities. Whether it's a sport, dance class or activity club, let children try new things until they find something they really enjoy. Consider rewarding their accomplishments to keep them motivated. (Not with regular ice cream sundaes, though. That would be counterproductive.) – Be a good example. It's hard to tell kids to get moving when you're a couch potato, so find activities that you can enjoy together. – Pull the plug. Limit kids' time on digital devices so they will be more likely to get up and get moving. >>>>>>> >> Keeping kids active We're Here for You.
