Greetings, physicians and other healthcare leaders, and welcome to The Innovation Edition of MD News Mid-Penn. In this issue, we present diverse perspectives from highly regarded healthcare organizations about forward-looking ways they are optimizing outcomes. Lancaster General Health has collaborated with multiple stakeholders to create a Smart Health Innovation Lab designed to speed development of technologies that lower costs, improve population health and the patient experience, and reduce provider burden. UPMC Pinnacle unites leading-edge techniques for early detection of lung cancer with state-of-the-art robotic and other technologies that allow patients diagnosed with the disease to remain in the area for life-extending treatment. WellSpan York Hospita l uses robotic percutaneous coronary intervention to reduce radiation exposure and physical strain for physicians, while promising improved outcomes by enhancing techniques with the possibility of remote procedures in the future. In a series of four articles, we examine several facets of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center's commitment to innovative care: + Researchers on the Penn State Plastic Surgery team may revolutionize diabetes treatment through the development of stem cell-derived ß-cells, eliminating ethical concerns about the use of embryonic stem cells. + Performed by surgeons at Penn State Neuroscience Institute, MRI-guided laser ablation can be an e‡ective alternative when brain cancer recurs or patients are not candidates for first-line surgical excision of tumors. + Dorsal root ganglion stimulation therapy provides relief for patients with complex regional pain syndrome and peripheral causalgia who do not gain adequate pain control with conventional medication and spinal cord stimulation. + Many patients with heart rhythm disorders benefit from Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute's use of a next-generation leadless pacemaker, the Micra, which helps eliminate issues such as lead dislodgement. You will also find articles about liquid vs. tissue biopsies, expansive applications of yttrium-90 radioembolization, new-and-upcoming medical devices, and practice management.
