Although both men and women can experience the most common symptoms during a heart attack—chest pressure, dizziness, shortness of breath and fatigue—women can sometimes have atypical symptoms, which include: • Sharp pain in the back, jaw or arm • Nausea, stomach pain or vomiting • Indigestion If you experience these symptoms, call 911 immediately. It's vital for adults to be aware of the risk factors for heart disease. Frankfort Regional Medical Center has a tool that can help. As a fully accredited Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, Frankfort Regional is committed to not only providing rapid treatment in times of emergency but also the information and resources necessary to assist people in maintaining and improving their health while they are feeling well. Adults are at the greatest risk of a cardiac event if they have a history of smoking, a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure or are overweight. If you have questions about your level of risk, Frankfort Regional now offers a free online assessment that can quickly provide you with a cardiac risk score after you supply information about your age, lifestyle and family history. "Patients who possess any of the risk factors for a heart attack should meet with their primary care provider to get advice on what steps they can take," says Marty Denny, MD, FACC, FSCAI, Director of Interventional Cardiology at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. "Just changing a few aspects of your life can greatly reduce the risk of having a heart attack." For instance, walking just 30 minutes a day is enough to lower a person's risk of heart disease and stroke. And according to the American Heart Association, if a woman quits smoking, she can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 50 percent.
