P H Y S I C I A N R EC R U I T M E N T F I R M Kenda l l & Dav is urges prov iders to address the potential for burnout pro- actively. Among its recommendations: + Speak up. There is too much evidence of the often-systemic roots of burnout to dismiss the problem as merely a failing on the part of the physician. St. Louis-based Kendall & Davis notes Mayo Clinic research suggesting these issues aff ect not only the physician but also the quality of care he or she provides. Raising the subject — and put- ting it in those terms — is reasonable. + Seek fl exibility. Maybe you cannot reduce your hours to any signifi cant degree. However, you may be able to adjust when you arrive and leave each day to free up more time for family and outside interests. + Politely decline. If you are already headed for exhaustion but feel guilty about saying no to a new set of duties, you may be looking at things from the wrong perspective. How much will patients benef it if you accept new responsibilities and wind up with a case of burnout that aff ects the care you deliver? That's a point employers should be able to understand. n 2 2
