WITH THIS DESIGNATION, WellSpan York Hospital joins an elite group of healthcare organizations around the country focused on highly specialized stroke care at the ready for patients, 24/7. Nationa lly, less than 3 percent of hospita ls have achieved Comprehensive Stroke Center designation. "This prestigious certification is a proud achievement for our clinicians and staŠ, who've worked hard to provide the highest level of stroke care to our patients and our communities," says Keith Noll, Senior Vice President, WellSpan Health, and President, WellSpan York Hospital. "As a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, we are a regional resource for advanced care in treating even the most critically ill stroke patients — at any time, day or night." To receive the honor, the hospital had to meet rigorous stan- dards including those related to advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 availability of specia lized treatments, and providing staŠ with the unique education and competencies to care for complex stroke patients. This adds to WellSpan's network of certified Primary Stroke Centers: WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital in Lancaster County, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital in Adams County and WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon County. A ll Primar y Stroke Centers are recognized by The Joint Commission and the AHA/ASA as having made exceptional eŠorts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. EXCEPTIONAL CARE ACROSS THE SYSTEM Lori Clark, Vice President of the Neurosciences Service Line, explains that these achievements illustrate the culture of exceptional stroke care across WellSpan. Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States, according to the AHA/ASA. On average, someone suŠers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, and 795,000 people suŠer a new or recurrent stroke each year. " Patients don't have to think t w ice about where to go for stroke care," says Grant Sorkin, MD, an endovascular neurosurgeon with WellSpan Neurosurgery.
