Many older houses required only 60 amps of electricity when they were built, which is a pa ltr y amount compared to the 150 or 200 amps that are provided in today 's home-construction projects. There are more than 45,000 home electrica l fires ever y year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, with about ha lf of them involving faulty lighting equipment or electrica l wiring. Worth Looking Into? Some signs your house may require rewir- ing include the presence of two-pronged, ungrounded outlets; aluminum wiring instead of copper; or a lack of ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets in kitchens and bathrooms. If you notice any of these features, make sure your house is safe and up to code by having a qualified electrician examine your system. Regardless of how old your home is, an inspection is a good idea, especially if you don't know when the last one was performed. n It's What's Inside THAT COUNTS Make sure older homes are properly wired — not only to keep the lights on but also to keep you safe. 70 | Greater Boston Builder+Architect BOSTON.BUILDERARCHITECT.COM
