HRMC Calendar of Upcoming Events huron regional medical center's hospice team is devoted to helping families enjoy their time together. LEARNING THAT YOU or a loved one has a life-limiting condition can throw your world into chaos, calling to mind an endless and overwhelming array of medical, legal and spiritual questions. If you are facing the challenging journey ahead alone, your stress may make medical matters worse and rob you and your family of quality of life. "Many people associate hospice with the end of life, but our focus is on enhancing quality of life," says Karen Decker, RN, MA, hospice bereavement and volunteer coordinator and nurse with Huron Regional Medical Center. "Our goal is to make each individual and family as comfortable as possible so they can concentrate on making every moment count." A Full Spectrum of Care Medical director William Miner, MD, leads hospice care at HRMC. The multidisciplinary group works with your primary care practitioners and specialists. The group includes nurses, home health aides, a social worker, a chaplain, a bereavement coordinator and volunteers to help guide your family through your journey. Your healthcare provider will refer you or your family member to begin receiving hospice care after a life-limiting diagnosis or when you've decided to stop receiving treatment. Hospice services are available in the patient's home, a hospital, an assisted living facility or skilled nursing facility. "I encourage families to talk to their doctors about hospice as early as possible so that they may become familiar with our staff and we can start managing symptoms and pain as quickly as possible," Decker says. "We want families to be able to relax and do things together." The community-based hospice team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to quickly respond to your needs. ■ For more information about hospice care at HRMC, call (605) 353-6520 or visit www.huronregional.org/hospice.
