Hip replacement surgeries today are far better than they used to be. "The most difficult part of my job is to dispel the myth of it taking long to recover from a hip replacement surgery. People are led to believe that it will be a terrible experience. It's important for them to know that a hip replacement today is not the hip replacement of 10 or 20 years ago." —Dave Smith, DC, PT, joint care coordinator at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Joint Center replacement surgery, and patients often experience a much easier and faster recovery." After a successful surgery, Mary started down the road to recovery—a trip far shorter than she originally anticipated. "The same day as my hip surgery, I was not only walking with minor assistance, but I was also climbing stairs," Mary says. "The hip pain had vanished completely. I was able to go home the next morning. My hip is a miracle, and I call Dr. Jain and his team my miracle workers." THE NEW HIP After only a few physical therapy sessions, Mary was walking unassisted by the end of the first week. She returned to work less than three weeks after surgery. "I had heard so many nightmare stories about hip replacement surgeries over the years," Mary says. "Because of those stories, I put up with pain much longer than I needed to." With her other hip also showing signs of trouble, Mary already knows where she'll go to get it fixed. "I live only two miles from another facility that does hip replacements," Mary says. "However, I will drive the 45 minutes to see Dr. Jain if it means I can have the same experience again." Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Joint Center is the first in Illinois to receive The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement.
