Greetings, physicians and healthcare leaders, and welcome to the latest issue of MD News Greater Kansas. In this issue, we feature two practices that seek to increase the awareness of conditions that can easily go unrecognized. In our cover story, we explore how it is common for leg pain from peripheral arterial disease to get written off as an orthopedic issue rather than a vascular condition. A f ter more tha n two decades as a ca rdiovascula r specialist, Raymond Dattilo, MD, FACC, recognized the correlation between leg pain and blocked arteries and opened Flint Hills Heart, Vascular and Vein, in Manhattan, Kansas, to raise awareness about both the symptoms and treatment options of peripheral arterial disease. He and his staff employ advanced technolog y to open blocked arteries, which increases blood flow and significantly reduces amputation rates. Since the opening of the clinic in 2013, staff members have treated more than 1,000 patients, with a limb salvage rate of more than 90 percent, well above the national benchmark of 80 percent. In our special feature, we focus on glaucoma, which, it is estimated, more than 3 million Americans have but only half are aware of — a cause for concern, given the fact that the disease can lead to blindness. Anita Campbell, MD, an ophthalmologist at Grene Vision Group, now offers four types of minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries, which are safer than traditional methods and enable patients to heal in one week, with little interruption to their lifestyles. MD News shares the latest in treatments and technologies with physicians throughout Kansas.
