COMMUNITY•WIDE COLLABORATION ADDRESSES WELLNESS, SPIRITUALITY AND END•OF•LIFE IN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM A robust crowd of healthcare professionals, educators and social workers came together for the second annual Spirituality & Healthcare Conference "Healing Our Fractured Healthcare: Closing the Gaps Between Wellness, Spirituality and End-of-life" on Oct. 11 and 12 at the Oblate School of Theology. Dr. Jessica Nutik-Zitter, a national advo - cate for improving the way people die in America, opened the conference with her keynote "A New Kind of Heroism," and was followed by an emotionally charged screening of the Academy Award- nominated documentar y film, Extremis. On day two, keynote speakers addressed "Medical Education as an Agent of Change" and "Integrating Ar t, Spirituality and Health." Conference attendees had the oppor tunity to par tici - pate in a variety of breakout sessions that addressed the spiritual dynamics of sickness and wellness, faith, and diversity issues in healthcare, end-of-life and palliative care conversations, and col - laborations for children with chronic illnesses, among others. A spiritual thread also was woven throughout the conference help - ing attendees connect mind, body and spirit. The community-wide collaboration offered continuing medical and nurse education credits for attendees. The conference was hosted by The Final Acts Project, Oblate School of Theology, UT Health Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics, UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine, UIW School of Nursing and Health Professions, Compassionate San Antonio and the San Antonio peaceCENTER.
