++++++++++++++++ MEDBEAT +++ +++ ++++++++++++++++ + + MISSOURI BAPTIST NAMED FIRST CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR MINIMALLY INVASIVE GYNECOLOGIC SURGERY IN THE MIDWEST Missouri Baptist Medical Center has been designated a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), the leading as- sociation of minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons worldwide, and Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). Program Director Scott Biest, M.D., and Missouri Baptist Medical Center are the first COEMIG designees in the Midwest. Missouri Baptist Medical Center's program provides women with innovative, minimally invasive surgical treatment options for hysterectomies, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, prolapse and other gynecologic conditions. Founded in April 2011, Missouri Baptist Medical Center's COEMIG program was the shared vision of Dr. Biest, Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at both Missouri Baptist Medical Center and Washington University, and David Weinstein, M.D., Chief of OB/GYN at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. TWO WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY FACULTY ELECTED TO INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE Wayne M. Yokoyama, M.D., and Charles F. Zorumski, M.D., have been elected to the Institute of Medicine, a part of the National Academy of Sciences. Membership in the organization is one of the highest honors physician-scientists in the United States can receive. Yokoyama is the Sam J. Zorumski is the Samuel B. Guze Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobiology and head of the department of psychiatry. He also serves as Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Director of the McDonnell Center for Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology. His work focuses on communication between neurons in the brain, especially in the hippo- campus, and how neurotransmitters and neu- romodulators facilitate learning and memory. His work studying anesthetic drugs led to the recent formation of the Taylor Family Institute for Innovative Psychiatric Research. The goal of the institute is to understand the roles of natural and synthetic neurosteroid molecules in psychiatric illnesses like depression and schizophrenia, and to identify neurosteroid targets that could lead to new therapies.
