What was once provided only in an inpatient setting may now be offered in skilled nursing facilities or even in a patient's home. However, UMC recognized the need for an additional option that could offer enhanced continuity of care and flexibility. "e Ambulatory Infusion Center provides a level of choice we didn't have 10 years ago," said Mark Lacy, M.D., infectious disease specialist, Texas Tech Physicians and medical director of the Ambulatory Infusion Center at UMC Health System. "We can discharge patients from the hospital sooner and sometimes avoid hospitalization completely. For example, a patient received by the Emergency Room with a case of cellulitis may be best served by going straight to the Ambulatory Infusion Center for treatment instead of checking in to the hospital." Services available at the center include administration of anti-infective treatments, blood transfusions and immune-modulating therapies. Within the last five months, 13 Emergency Center visits have been avoided and 217 hospital days have been saved because of the program. e center is located on the southeast corner of the UMC Health System campus in the Medical Office Plaza 2, Suite 120. It features six private patient suites outfitted with intravenous equipment and comfortable recliners. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE AMBUL ATORY INFUSION CENTER, CALL 806.761.0710.
