We live in a 24-hour news cycle. And whether you enjoy the constant stream of updates or feel pummeled by what seems to be a deluge of negative stories, it is impossible to ignore two headlines that affect those working in the healthcare industry: the shortage of certain specialists and the vulnerability of electronic medical information. We address both in this issue. According to a 2017 Endocrine Society report, there are fewer than 6,500 practicing endocrinologists in the United States available to care for the millions of patients who su†er from diabetes, osteoporosis, thyroid disease and other hormonal conditions. That's where Dr. Michael Koren, the focus of our cover story, comes in. An endocrinologist new to our area, Dr. Koren has joined Western Reserve Hospital Physicians, Inc., to provide much-needed general endocrinology care to patients in our region. His range of services includes diabetes care, the management of thyroid and parathyroid disease, pituitary disorders, adrenal gland disorders, osteoporosis, low testosterone and other endocrine conditions. In our business section, you'll find an article addressing cybersecurity risks. According to an NBC News report, information technology experts say healthcare-record hacking is skyrocketing — up 11,000 percent in 2017 alone. That's scary for everyone, but even more so for the folks handling this data every day. In this article, the third in a series on cybersecurity by one of our area's healthcare law experts, you'll learn how to identify and mitigate cybersecurity risks within your organization. There's more in the pages in between — on the business, as well as clinical side of medicine — so read on. We look forward to your continued readership and support!
