Last fall, Huron Regional Medical Center welcomed a surgeon with extensive experience in treating a wide range of conditions to the region: Ronald J. Barrette, DO*.
Dr. Barrette, board-certified cardiovascular, thoracic and general surgeon, grew up in Michigan shadowing his father, who was a physician in a rural area. The young man followed in his father's footsteps in more ways than one. "During my undergraduate education at
Michigan State University, the institution added a college of osteopathic medicine," says Dr. Barrette. "My dad was a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO), so I decided to pursue that degree, too." As a DO, Dr. Barrette has received additional

training and instruction to provide a more holistic level of care and treat the whole patient as opposed to just an illness or condition. Building on this foundation, Dr. Barrette completed a residency in general surgery and fellowships in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at hospitals in his home state before embarking on a career that led him across the country. After working at a hospital in Richmond, Va., for the last two years, Dr. Barrette learned of an opening at HRMC, and his love of the Midwest and its history brought him to South Dakota.
