Continued from Page 43 used to predict the survival of patients with lung cancer and their response to this new drug and other treatments. Stanley L. Hazen, MD, PhD, and W.H. Wilson tang, MD, researchers at Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, were recently part of two international genetic studies. Dr. Hazen, who is chair of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, was among over 180 researchers who integrated their genetic findings into a network analysis that disclosed two most prominent biological pathways to coronary artery disease (CAD): the metabolism of fats and secondly, inflammation. Though the results do not deliver a genetic test to predict risk of disease, they are a major step toward developing new therapeutic strategies. The results were published online in Nature Genetics on December 2, 2012. In another study, Dr. Hazen and Dr. Tang were part of a group of researchers which identified 75 genetic determinants of anemia, over half of which have never before been known to associate with RBCs. These discoveries are critical for understanding the regulation of RBC formation and function and for developing subsequent treatment approaches to anemia-related conditions. The results were published online in Nature on December 5, 2012. David Kaelber, MD, PhD, MPH, was named one of Modern Healthcares Top 25 Clinical Informaticists of 2012. This recognition honors medical professionals who excel at using patient-care data to improve both the clinical and financial performance of their healthcare organizations. Dr. Kaelber is MetroHealths Chief Medical Informaticist and an internal medicine/pediatric physician. Under his leadership, MetroHealth became one of the first health systems in the nation to fully implement electronic health records (EHR) across the board. Since joining The MetroHealth System in 2005, Dr. Kaelber has used EHR to complete several studies, including one that identifies children who are at risk for obesity-related diseases such as diabetes. On the heels of this work, Dr. Kaelber led an initiative at MetroHealth and throughout Ohio to improve screening, assessment and treatment of obesity and related diseases. He also created a simple chart to identify children with high blood pressure. Published in the journal Pediatrics in 2008, this chart is now widely used among pediatricians across the country. Jonathan Lass, MD, was honored by the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) with the 2012 R. Townley Paton Award for his work on corneal preservation and his 30-plus-year career as an ophthalmologist and medical educator. Dr. Lass is chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center and director of the UH Eye Institute. Dr. Lass is also medical director for the Cleveland Eye Bank, and medical director of the Case Cornea Image Analysis Reading Center. Michael Pelini, MD, a Summa cardiologist was featured in a Modern Healthcare article for his use of a subcutaneous implantable cardiac defibrillator (S-ICD), a new technology which provides life-saving intervention to patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest and dangerous heart arrhythmias without touching the patients heart or involving wires to the heart like a regular implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD). Dr. Pelini was the first physician in Northeast Ohio to use this revolutionary device, which reportedly is the first of its kind in the world. A dv e r t i s e r s i n d e x Akrons Childrens Hospital .......................
