SurGerY Feature The Future of Joint replacement Is here By Robert Janek H E ALTH C AR E R E FO R M WI LL have a major impact on the future delivery of health care. The challenge for hospitals and physicians alike is how to improve quality of care, patient safety and patient satisfaction in a cost effective way. The Division of Joint Reconstruction & Arthritis Surgery at University Hospitals Ca se Medica l Center (UHCMC) Department of Orthopaedics is prepared to meet this challenge. In fact, their joint replacement program is ahead of the curve. In August, UHCMC was awarded certification from The Joint Commission for both hip and knee replacement. The hospital is also a participant in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP), which is a nationally validated, risk-adjusted, outcomes-based program to measure and improve the quality of surgical care. Our long legacy of innovation and leadership in joint replacement surgery; the experience of our surgical, nursing and patient care staff; and our dedication to the process of continuous quality improvement are essential elements of our focus on quality, safety and patient satisfaction, says Matthew J. Kraay, MS, MD, Director of the Division and the Kingsbury G. Heiple and Fred A. Lennon Professor of Orthopaedics at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).
