If your hospital or practice group is just beginning the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10, here are a few places to start. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) website is a comprehensive, easy-to-navigate resource for understanding and implementing ICD-10. AHIMA���s training program can certify one of your employees to become your hospital or practice group���s in-house coding expert. To learn more, visit www.ahima.org/icd10. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website features a Provider Resource page with step-by-step implementation plans that are free to download. These plans are tailored for large practices, small hospita ls and sma ll/medium provider practices. The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) has developed a training program to help your organization prepare for ICD-10 transition. Insufficient mental health services at nursing homes have been linked to increased morbidity and death. As a result of expanding mental telemedicine resources, rural nursing homes where obtaining psychiatric care was formerly cost prohibitive can now offer remote counseling, therapy and even patient management. A study by WinterGreen research estimates the telemedicine business will be a $2.5 billion market by 2018. Studies support the theory that psychiatric treatment via video conference is at least as effective as face-to-face treatment in areas where mental health services were previously unavailable. In areas where both services are congruently available, studies are inconclusive. Asynchronous or store-and-forward psychiatric telemedicine is the next step for mental telehealth.
