St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospi - tal's commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment accord- ing to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. St. Catherine of Siena earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a desig - nated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to- date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, pa - tients should also receive education about managing their health, have a follow-up visit scheduled and other care transition interventions. Additionally, St. Catherine of Siena received the association's Target: Stroke SM Elite award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient's arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tis- sue plasminogen activator, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. The American Heart and Stroke Association awarded Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center (BMHMC) with its highest honor of Stroke Gold Plus & Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll. This is the second year in a row BMHMC has received the desig - nation, which is given only to those hospitals who administer the clot-busting tissue plasminogen activator thromboly tic to 75 per - cent or more of the patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke, within 60 minutes of their arrival.
