THE HAND CENTER Part of Orlin & Cohen's expansion includes the creation of The Hand Center, led by Bennett Brown, MD, Director of The Hand Center at Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group. The Hand Center serves as a one-stop location for patients with any type of hand, wrist or elbow problem, including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tennis or golfer's elbow, sprains, fractures, arthritis, cysts, nerve injuries, and more. "Some people don't know where to go when they have hand problems — whether to see a dermatologist or a neurologist or someone else," Dr. Brown says. "We wanted to make The Hand Center a place where we could take care of whatever problems patients may have." The Ha nd Center is home to f ive hand and upper extremity specialists, who practice in Lynbrook, Garden City, Merrick, Woodbury and Bohemia. These specialists constitute the largest con- centration of hand and upper extremity specialists within a single institution on Long Island. Their accumulated expertise is a resource Dr. Brown often turns to when treating patients. "All the physicians affiliated with The Hand Center — myself included — are fellowship-trained in hand, wrist and elbow surgery," Dr. Brown says. "There is a lot of intricate anatomy in the hand and wrist, so it's nice to be able to converse with our own adept specialists on individual patient cases." Additionally, specialists at The Hand Center can rely on certified hand therapists located at the facilities. These therapists can administer physical or occupational therapy, help choose the right braces and splints for patients, and even create custom splints and braces on short notice — often the same day as a patient's appointment. Diagnostic tests and screenings, includ- ing MRIs, digital X-rays and CT scans, are also available at The Hand Center locations and across the Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group network. On-site, fel- lowship-trained neurologists at The Hand Center can perform electromyograms and examine patients with conditions such as carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome. CONVENIENCE AND ACCESSIBILITY Since all tests are performed within Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group as opposed to an outside testing location, patients can receive their test results and schedule follow-up appointments within 24 hours of a test's completion. Even if patients require multiple services based on their initial appointments with specialists, The Hand Center can often schedule and complete these tests and treatments in a matter of hours. "We're open late and on weekends, and since specialists are spread out across Long Island, we can help get patients the care they need without a long wait," Dr. Brown says. "Whether patients require therapy, braces or an MRI, they can typically get it all done that same day or within 24 hours." This focus on quick, convenient access to care is a tenet of not only The Hand Center, but also the entirety of Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group. "We treat our patients like professional athletes," Dr. Levitz says. "If a professional basketball player can begin physical therapy on the same day he's injured and get back on the court in two weeks, why shouldn't everyone else expect the same care?" The extended hours and dedication of Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group's subspecialists are available in multiple locations on Long Island, allowing com- munity members to receive the care they need at a time and place that works best for them. The current expansion into Suffolk County and future expansions will ensure more patients can see an orthopedic spe- cialist without traveling far or dealing with traffic delays. URGENT CARE As part of Orlin & Cohen's commitment to prov id i n g qu ick , conven ient a nd Bennett Brown, MD, Director of The Hand Center at Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group, examines a patient's wrist. James Paci, MD, Director of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine for Suffolk County at Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group, examines his patient's injured knee. M D N E W S .
