IN A COLLECTIVE EFFORT TO ADDRESS THE IMPACT THE FASHION industry has on climate change across the entire supply chain, leading apparel and footwear brands are endorsing a new UN Charter for Climate Action. Launched last month, under the auspices of UN Climate Change, and in alignment with the Paris Agreement, the charter aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Founding signatories, which include Schoeller, have committed to implementing, or supporting, the 16 principles and targets that under- pin the Fashion Climate Charter, ranging from de-carbonization of the production phase, selection of climate-friendly and sustainable materials, low-carbon transport, and improved consumer dialogue and awareness. Additionally, an initial target has already been set to reduce aggregate greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030. "A focus on sustainability has been mandatory at Schoeller since serving as a founding developer of the bluesign system and then becoming the very first company to receive the bluesign award in 2008," says Siegfried Winkelbeiner, Schoeller CEO. "We are proud to continue that tradition in our 150th year, as we come together with other influential partners in our industry and hope that others will join this important pursuit." Other Charter signatories (at press time) include: adidas, Burberry, Esprit, Guess, Gap Inc., Hugo Boss, H&M Group, Inditex, Kering Group, Levi Strauss, Mammut, Puma SE, PVH Corp., and Target. l See executives explain their decision to join the charter in a video available online on YouTube at this url: youtu.be/hUUh226SmaU DRAWING ON EACH FIRM'S DEVELOPMENT OF ECO PERFORMANCE fabrications, and processes that use less energy and water, a new collaborative collection from Lenzing and Hyosung showcases the sustainable benefits of Lenzing Tencel and creora elastane from Hyosung. Mark Davis, Eagle Creek product line manager explains that the recycled water-resistant coating (RPVB) is made from discarded automobile windshields and is super durable.
