Co-owner Bob McArthur confirmed to the St. Louis Business Journal that the com- pany plans to liquidate all of its retail stores following the acquisition of its team division by BSN. "They bought the team and school side of the business. The retail stores will be going through a liquidation sale. We'll close all of those retail locations, but during that time, the Johnny Mac's sales staff of the team and school (side) will be operating out of those stores as they have in the past," he said in mid-February, adding that Johnny Mac's team and school sales account for about two-thirds of the company's business. It has retail stores in Missouri, Illinois and Michigan, including five locations in the St. Louis area. McArthur said that a sales office will remain at its headquarters "for at least 18 months" and that there are also plans to keep an office open in Michigan. Close to 100 Johnny Mac's employees will be joining BSN Sports. In a slightly smaller move, last month BSN Sports also acquired the team division of Janor Sports, based in Naperville, IL, which serves the suburban Chicago market. Janor's sports events busi- ness, operated in conjunction with its parent company, Athletx Sports Group, was not included as part of the acquisition. Massachusetts Considering Tackle Ban Under a bipartisan bill sup- ported by 17 Massachusetts House members, schools and leagues would be fined $2000 for allowing children in grade seven and below to play orga- nized tackle football. "We're not banning football. Touch football, flag football, great. Up through the seventh grade, go to it," said Rep. Paul Schmid, one of the lead spon- sors of the bill. "What we're saying is, for seventh grade and under, no tackle football." Schmid said the state government needs to step in because there is no single statewide authority that gov- erns football like there are for soccer or hockey, sports that have taken steps to eliminate parts of the game that most often lead to head injuries. New York, California, Maryland, Illinois and New Jersey are considering simi- lar bills, but no state has yet passed a ban into law. OC Promotes Reagan OC Sports has promoted Brad Reagan to national sales manager, replacing the retir- ing Joe Rubertino. Reagan has more than 15 years of experience in the team sports industry, nine with Outdoor Cap, the parent company of OC Sports. SanMar Expands Team SanMar recently made some additions and changes to its management team. • Janine Oates joins as design director, overseeing the company's creative product team. • Teak Hernandez is the new director for SanMar's athletic brands. Previously with Adidas, Hernandez will work with the merchandis- ing team to drive the vision for SanMar's athletic brands, including Sport-Tek, Ogio and New Era. • Rob Crowley has been pro- moted to senior director of basic brands, where he will work with brand partners. Letter to the Editor: A Response to NOCSAE An article in the January 2019 issue of Team Insight featured a Q&A article with NOCSAE executive director Mike Oliver explaining how the organiza- tion operates (Inside NOCSAE, Janary/February 2019 Team Insight). The following is a response from Herb Markwort, president of Markwort Sporting Goods and the makers of the C-Flap. To the Editor: Seventy-five to 90 percent of all batting helmets are not cur- rently SEI certified. Are those helmets legal? C-Flap will not cause any of those helmets to lose their certification because they have already lost it. Many makers only certify their hel- mets for one year. Catcher and umpire helmets are even worse. We estimate that 95 percent are not cur- rently SEI certified. How many years past a hel- met's SEI certification period is it okay for youth league, NFHS and NCAA players to keep playing in these old helmets? Thirty-nine years ago we helped introduce and make available the new Steve Yeager Throat Protector. Why hasn't NOCSAE issued a press release warning about this Add-On Helmet Product? NOCSAE states it doesn't approve or disapprove any product, so why is it pushing against C-Flap? Regards, Herb Markwort, Jr. Markwort Sporting Goods n Editor's Note: Thanks Larry and Stu In just the past month two of the people I have worked very closely with for the past many, many years have announced their retirement and I wanted to thank them publicly for all of their fine work and friendship. First came news that Larry Weindruch retired this month after 33 years with the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA). Weindruch has been at the retail trade association for every one of the years I have been involved in the industry in his roles as director of the association's Team Dealer Division, director of public affairs, president of the National Ski & Snowboard Retailers Association and, for many years, its director of communications, where I worked extensively with him. During Weindruch's time at NSGA he played a critical role in leading a source tagging initiative, improving loss prevention across the industry. He also served as a champion for establishing partnerships with organizations such as the Marketplace Fairness Coalition, the PHIT Coalition and National Health Through Fitness Day, and Americans for Free Trade. He was key in forging alliances within the National Retail Federation and Partnership for a Healthier America. Gwen Biasi has joined NSGA as its director of marketing and communications. Biasi, with 17 years' experience working in associations, will serve NSGA in an advocacy role and as liaison to the NSSRA. Then came news that my old friend Stuart Snow is also retiring this month as director of recruiting and member services for Nation's Best Sports after 20 years with the buying group. Always available for an on- or off-the-record comment on the state of the industry – and for some Texas BBQ whenever I visited the association's offices in Fort Worth – Snow served as a divisional merchandising manager before becoming a VP–merchandising managing the Team and Retail Athletic division for eight years. After 10 years in the merchandising department, Stuart transitioned over to Recruiting and Member Services in January 2009. Julie Cerza took over the role of director of member recruiting and member services. — Michael Jacobsen END ZONE teaminsightmag.com Larry Weindruch (left) and Stuart Snow
