T H E M O H A W K VA L L E Y H E A LT H SYSTEM (MVHS) now has a unique fea- ture for recruiting top physicians to the region — a new, state-of-the-art health- care campus. The new campus brings the existing hospital services, currently located on two different campuses, to one modern downtown campus that will offer advanced medicine and technologically progressive care. It will a llow MVHS providers to practice in a contemporary environment to provide high-quality care to patients. As one of the newest, most technologi- cally advanced hospitals in the Northeast, the MVHS hospital will be a major draw for attracting talented physicians to this region. The MVHS Physician Recruitment Office is already seeing the benefits of the new hospital. "Recruiting providers to Central New York is not always simple, as providers seem to prefer working in bigger cities as opposed to smaller areas like ours," says Kelly Domizio, Physician Acquisition Specialist at MVHS. "However, the advent of a new hospital is generating a great deal more interest from physicians who are looking for a new opportunity. Providers are excited to work in what will be the newest hospital in New York state. Other health systems can't offer that." This new healthcare campus is only the third new hospital to be built in New York state in the past 20 years and much of the facility design was developed by physi- cians themselves. More than 378 care providers offered feedback during more tha n 155 user g roup meetings whi le designing the hospital. Eric Porritt, DO, a recent addition to the orthopedic team at MVHS, cites the new hospital as a major driving factor for choosing to relocate to Utica. "I was looking for an area where I could do what I do, as far as trauma and joint replacements, but that also offered appeal- ing lifestyle features to allow me to continue participating in the recreational activities I enjoy," Dr. Porritt says. "I enjoy outdoor sports, such as skiing. Initially, New York was not at the top of the list, but with the idea of working at a new, state-of-the-art hos- pital in the near future, it seemed perfect. I'm glad I made the choice to come here." M ich a el Kelb er m a n , M D, FACC, Central New York Cardiology, has spent most of his career in Central New York and is confident that the new hospital will improve provider recruitment to the area. "I never thought, during my career, that we would have the opportunity to build a new medical center for our community," Dr. Kelberman says. "I'm convinced the new hospital will dramatically improve Utica. We are a lready starting to see positive changes in physician interest and recruitment. The future is looking much brighter because of the new hospital."
