Check the hashtag #pocketdump on Instagram and you'll see how trendy Everyday Carry (EDC) knives have become. In theory #pocketdump shows what's in one's pocket on a daily basis. In Insta-world it is often a carefully curated photo of cool items — and EDC knives with a modern design aesthetic are trending big-time. Morakniv's Companion Spark is designed to be a reliable tool that performs in any weather condition. The blade is made of 2.5mm thick Swedish stainless steel. MSRP $34.99. The Buck Knives Sprint Pro utilizes ball bearing technology, and is designed for efficient opening and rapid blade deployment. MSRP $180. Kershaw's Boilermaker features an all-stainless- steel folder. It is designed to perform well in the hands of any tradesman—and anyone else who wants a distinctive, yet practical, pocketknife. MSRP $59.99. The Zero Tolerance (ZT) 0393 was a hit when it was introduced last year. The new version has a hard- use "working" finish and a glow-in-the-dark carbon fiber handle overlay. MSRP $350. Gerber Gear's Jukebox puts a modern twist on an old school classic, with a full edge blade that is easily deployed. Benchmade's Proper knife is a simple yet modern take on a classic gentleman's knife. CRKT's Pilar Large has a minimalist's everyday carry folder combined with clean design. MSRP $54.99. Leatherman's FREE K4 combines the portability of a folding knife and the versatility of a multi-tool. MSRP $89.95. #TRENDING FREE collection feature a first-of-its-kind magnetic architecture that integrates magnets into the design, making it easier to open, handle, and close the tools. "The new multipurpose platform infuses new life into the brand and offers a new approach to how we design and build products," says Ben Rivera, president and CEO of Leatherman Tool Group. "The new logo reflects that evolution. We are taking the focus off the pliers itself and now embracing everything the tool enables us to do. We are evolving from just making multi-tools with pliers to becoming a multipurpose brand that empowers the multi in everyone." The refreshed Leatherman logo represents the brand's objective to expand its draw to wider audiences and showcases the evolution of the brand. The former logo depicted a silhouette of a pliers-based Leatherman tool. The sleeker logo hints at the shape of the iconic tool yet stands alone as the "L" in Leatherman. "Becoming a multipurpose brand means thinking about what our tools represent to a diverse group of owners and recognizing that it's different for everyone," says Rivera. l May 2019 • Outdoor Insight • 19 outdoorinsightmag.com
