RECENT DATA FROM the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Association of A merican Medica l Colleges, and other agencies and organizations underscore those distinctions. Washington-based credit report website WalletHub, owned by Evolution Finance Inc., drew on that data to compile rankings based on a number of factors that define states' and the District of Columbia's practice environments. + Malpractice liability insurance: Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Kansas had the lowest costs in this area. New York had the highest, followed by Illinois, Michigan, the District of Columbia and West Virginia. + Malpractice awards: Per capita, the lowest malpractice payouts were in Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, North Carolina and Texas. There was a three-way tie for high- est — New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York — followed by Rhode Island and Massachusetts. + Physician wages: Adjusted for cost of living, physicians earned the highest annual wages in Mississippi, South Dakota, Iowa, Georgia and Tennessee. Lowest adjusted wages were in the District of Columbia, followed by Hawaii, New York, California and Oregon. + Medical boards: The least punitive medical boards were in Maine, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Hawaii. The most punitive board was in Delaware, followed by Kentucky and Wyoming.
