NYU Winthrop Hospital's Engineering Department hosted near- ly 30 HVAC students from Western Suffolk BOCES, providing a tour of the hospital's enormous and incredibly complex mechanical plants, including centrifugal chillers, absorption chillers, cooling towers, air handlers and more. The students, high school juniors and seniors from 18 different Suffolk County school districts, learned of the broad applications of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in an institutional setting, and they were exposed to the breadth of job pos - sibilities for the future. A highlight of the tour was visiting the rooftop for a birds-eye view of the hospital's central mechanical plants, with the Mineola skyline as a backdrop. Students also learned about the hospital's critical power systems: NYU Winthrop has six separate power supplies. If one were to go out, it was explained to students that there's an automated transfer switch to emergency power, and while the emergency generators are kicking in, there is an uninterruptible power supply to back up power instanta - neously, filling the void so that all power-driven activities at the hospital continue seamlessly and uninterrupted. Southside Hospital is the only medical center on Long Island that has been selected to participate in Biosense Webster Inc.'s clinical trial evaluating the safety and effectiveness of a new device designed to reduce stroke risk in atrial fibrillation patients. The WaveCrest Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) Trial is evaluat - ing the effectiveness of the WaveCrest Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) System in closing off a small sack of tissue on the muscle wall — called the left atrial appendage — where most stroke-causing blood clots form. Patients who are treated with the WaveCrest device are not required to continue taking anticoagulants or blood thin - ners after the procedure, a key benefit to people who cannot tolerate this medication. There are two other medical centers based in Manhattan that are participating in this clinical trial. St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center, and St. Charles Hospital, members of Catholic Health Services (CHS), received an "A" — the top grade in patient safety — in the latest Hospital Safety Grade, admin - istered by The Leapfrog Group. Of the more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals assigned grades for spring 2019, only 7.53 percent of hospitals in New York achieved an "A." St. Charles and St. Francis are among just three hospitals on Long Island to be awarded an "A" for the spring 2019 Hospital Safety Grade, with St. Francis now having earned an "A" 13 out of 15 times since the debut of the program. CHS's Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center and St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center both earned a "B" this grad - ing period. Every CHS hospital holds The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval® and the Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, among other honors and recognition. Today Southampton Hospital Association (SHA) and Stony Brook Medicine celebrated a momentous milestone with a ribbon-cutting cer - emony and tours of The Phillips Family Cancer Center. A fully integrated site of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, The Phillips Family Cancer Center started providing radiation therapy in May and will offer medical oncology in August. The Center changes cancer care on the East End by delivering advanced, comprehensive cancer treatments in a state-of-the-art, two-level, patient-centered building and healing environment located at 740 County Road 39A in Southampton, New York. "The Phillips Family Cancer Center would not have been possible without the generosity of the Phillips Family and their commitment to bringing advanced cancer care to the East End," says Robert Chaloner. "Extraordinary support from The Ellen Hermanson Foundation and the Estate of Melissa Morgan, facilitated by Barbara Borsack, further strengthened our commitment to bringing the most advanced cancer care close to home."
