END INSIGHT outdoorinsightmag.com 58 • Outdoor Insight • June 2019 MORE RETAILERS SHOULD TRY TO SOURCE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS TO SELL SO THEY ARE MORE AVAILABLE. MALE 39 Signage should be prominently placed to draw attention to the product… recycled materials of course. FEMALE 48 Retailers should showcase these products and make sure they are displayed in a way that brings integrity to the product. Products that are good for the planet should get good visibility in high traffic areas of the stores. FEMALE 42 Put them right next to other products so they can be easily compared — not in a section halfway across the store. FEMALE 43 Making sure that the product they are selling is truly eco-friendly. FEMALE 32 e retailer plays a major role, because the consumer does not have the capacity to make the decision for every product they buy. MALE 22 Stores have to advertise the products as eco- friendly. I don't have time to research every product I am looking to buy. They need to promote their product to me. FEMALE 41 The retailer should be an educator enlightening you about what the product is and how it works and what it's used for. They should be interested in your goals and match you to eco- friendly products you're looking for. FEMALE 41 LESS FLYERS, FEWER SIGNS IN THE STORE AND NOT USING THINGS LIKE BALLOONS IN STORE. MALE 42 I would prefer that the retailer of products that I purchase at least put in as much thought and effort into being eco-friendly as I do. FEMALE 36 I DON'T THINK RETAILERS WOULD NEED TO AS LONG AS THE MANUFACTURER DOES. FEMALE 42 They should be a champion for eco-friendly products. However, retailers like Wal-Mart cannot drop non-eco friendly products without impacting their bottom line. MALE 38 MAYBE THE ECO-FRIENDLY COMPANY SHOULD CHOOSE RETAILERS THAT HAVE A COMMITMENT TO A ZERO CARBON FOOTPRINT OR SOLAR POWER ETC. FEMALE 38 e retailer should make it easy for the consumer to choose the eco friendly products by either a) not selling bad products or b) marking up bad products so that the eco-friendly ones are the same price. FEMALE 30 Reducing the packaging, and anything that would be immediately discarded when making the purchase. MALE 41 It depends on the ethos and target market of the store. It would be nice if retailers pushed for more sustainable products, but the demand really has to come from consumers for it to be a smart business decision. FEMALE 33 I think it is important for the retailer to communicate that they offer eco- friendly products. I am more likely to shop at retailers or buy from retailers that support that mission. FEMALE 47 If their products say that they are eco-friendly the entire theme of the retailer should back up those claims. FEMALE 37 The retailer should advertise that they promote these initiatives and allow you to filter by this category when shopping through their website. FEMALE 48 They should all advertise eco-friendly products and come up with a way for people to bring in old shoes etc., to be responsibly taken care of for 15% off their next purchase. FEMALE 32 See the complete list of consumer comments at trendinsightmag.com Thinking about where to shop for eco-friendly products, what role, if any, should the retailer play? In our survey of 106 active/outdoor consumers, here are some of the comments they offered.
