Greetings, and welcome to MD News San Antonio. University Health System has become the San Antonio referral center for patients whose gynecologic cancer is particularly complicated, including women who have had previous surgeries or radiation treatment, whose disease may involve multiple organs or those with other health conditions complicating treatment. In our cover feature, we explore how the multidisciplinary approach at University Health System fortifies the team's ability to use a wide arsenal of tools as they treat women with cancers of the cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, vagina, vulva and uterus, as well as noncancerous gynecologic disease, such as endometriosis. In this issue's special feature, we learn more about how UT Health San Antonio is creating a centralized biobank that will strengthen critical research platforms and accelerate the pace of biomedical research. Because the majority of clinical trials and medical research in the U.S. is conducted on non-Hispanic Caucasians, many discoveries and resulting treatments may not be relevant to the San Antonio patient base, which is 64 percent Hispanic. The centralized biobank will allow for increased focus on collecting, processing and analyzing specimens from patients with diseases that disproportionately affect the south Texas population, with special emphasis on Alzheimer's disease, cancer, diabetes and heart disease. The number of physicians in independent practices is dwindling, and many physicians just completing their residencies are opting to join a hospital system rather than opening a new practice. We take a closer look at trends seen by CPAs who work with physicians, and we explore some of the pros and cons of the many associations that may help independent physicians lower costs and streamline their practices.
