Greetings, physicians and other leaders in health care, and welcome to the San Antonio edition of MD News. Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer face unique challenges when dealing with this life-threatening disease. Because of their ages — typically between 15 and 39 — they don't easily fit into pediatric or adult cancer pro- grams. At University Hospital in San Antonio, a dedicated team of physicians and specialists caters to this group of cancer patients who are often left out of clinical trials. In our cover story, learn how the AYA program at University Hospital meets these patients' unique medical needs while also helping them meet generational challenges like finishing their education, beginning a family or starting a career. Texas ranks fourth in the nation for the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease, and the state is second in the nation for the number of Alzheimer's deaths. A feature in this issue celebrates the designation of San Antonio as a Dementia Friendly City. The designation, which was spearheaded by UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing, recognizes the grassroots effort in place to build a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals living with dementia and to provide caregiver resources. As small business owners, physicians are not immune to lawsuits for employment-related issues. In our practice management feature, we take a closer look at the five most common reasons employees sue their employers, and we discuss strategies to have in place to reduce the risk of facing these legal issues.
