Greetings, physicians and other healthcare leaders. Welcome to The Innovations Edition of MD News Mid- Penn. I'm happy to share stories from leading healthcare providers and facilities around the region. Penn State Health is one of a small amount of centers in the United States to participate in a clinical trial for patients with low-grade non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). This trial is a phase 2, single-arm trial for UGN-102 — a chemotherapy drug called mitomycin C in gel form. This gel form chemotherapy allows oncologists at Penn State Health to not only prevent tumors from returning, but also to actually treat tumors. In this issue, we also see how WellSpan Health is embrac- ing a multipronged approach to diagnosing and treating sepsis. Through an algorithm in the health system's EHR, evidence-based care protocols and coordinated care teams, patients who present to the health system's four emergency departments with sepsis-related symptoms can now be diagnosed and treated faster than ever. Another feature story takes a look at UPMC Pinnacle's genetic counseling and breast cancer risks. Genetic counsel- ing and testing services help patients understand their cancer risk, which is especially important for women with a family history of breast cancer. Our clinical section about oncology evaluates the need for more cardio-oncologists to address treatment-related heart conditions among cancer patients. We look at possible links between obesity and later risk of pancreatic cancer as well. And we round up other news related to oncology. Our national feature looks at how retail clinics continue to adapt to patients' needs for convenience and continuity of care.
